R.I.P. Keith “Guru” Elam.
A lot of Moment of Truth and I think people overrate the album. It’s a classic no doubt, but the earlier Gang Starr work is far better. Premier experimenting samples and Guru with his great lyrics. Step in the Arena > Daily Operation > Hard to Earn > Moment of Truth > No More Mr. Nice Guy > The Ownerz.
4 Me – who got gunz on 3rd place.
Moment of truth was sick!
One Love from Poland Primo!
if anything, people overrate Guru and Premo’s earlier work. You could tell Premo was still experimenting and trying to get it perfect, which he later did.
Only 1 song out of the first 3 Jazzmatazz albums? Hmmmm
Weed Scented and The Piece Maker are just incredible timeless tracks.
Happy birthday Gurizzy.

^LOL you don’t know what you talkin’ about willis & obviously did’nt live that era.
moment of truth is by far the best gang starr album. it’s my favorite hip hop album of all time!
@Rob,
I don’t let nostalgia blind me.
Premo’s even said it himself. In the earlier days he was experimenting and then he got better.
The earlier joints were nice no doubt. And by earlier, I’m talking stuff from like “No More Mr Nice Guy.” With that said, a lot of that material sounds dated, whereas “Mass Appeal” doesn’t. You can tell Preme got better.
Yeah, Moment of Truth was the best album no doubt.
The mid 90’s / late 90’s soulful/groovy style has aged better in general not just Premier’s work during that time.
@ SirBiatch
So cause premier said it, it’s gotta be gospel right? Lol. If that’s what you like cool, but don’t go overboard saying it’s better. Premier is definitely a better producer now as anyone should be, but being better does’nt mean the beats are better now than before. He experimented way more then & you already know the story on his production with No Mr. Nice Guy. Next 3 LP’s are still to this day straight raw, dumb ill undergruund hip hop joints not too mention jeru & group home & on & on. Premo was way more hyped & iller in those days.
any sound or ask guru are classics, do not forget the classic who is not named in this list is: NY niggaz with sway king tech and dj revolution.
peace GURU
premos best days 92 to 95
Moment of Truth is just one of the illest albums ever. The Thriller of HIP HOP… or better the Off the Wall of Hip Hop
Hahaha overrate the old Gang Starr albums? How the fuck is Step in the Arena or Daily Operation overrated? Guru’s lyrics were deep and the production may not’ve been perfect, but the way Premier was flipping these samples man that was just crazy. Moment of Truth had great production no doubt, but Guru was better on Step in the Arena & Daily Operation and Premier didn’t have a formula on Step in the Arena. Listen to the albums and you’ll see. Premier has the same formula on Moment of Truth album and on the earlier work he is more versatile. I am not talking about No More Mr. Nice Guy. Premier experimenting and Guru who is bragging about how good he was compared to the rest. That’s how I liked it! RAW Gang Starr. No doubt Moment of Truth is a classic though. RIP GURU, DILLA, ODB & NUJABES
RIP Guru!
wow people are arguing over someone’s favorite songs, what a lost of focus
Code of the Streets?????????????????????????????????
Dam This dude is a DIVA! funny how he only puts 1 jazzmatazz song on there when there is so many good ones. What about Transite ride or this is art… its just the point that Guru aint here maybe thats why he really didnt see eye to eye wit dude and chose out…. did premier produce loungin? i bet he did.
lift ur fist wit the roots
Dam “cry” is not even on there that was one his classics from baldhead slick stuff..
In addition to most of those, I dug The Meaning of the Name, Knowledge, What I’m Here 4, Comin’ for Datazz, B.Y.S. & No Shame to My Game….
I was in my freshman year of high school when I bought the Step in the Arena album and that was our for me. Guru on the mic and Premier on the beats! Form of Intellect had me hype and that song led to my belief that Primo was my favorite producer. there after countless other tracks that Primo has produced that are awesome but that was the beat that started it for me.
