Blunted Astronaut Records x DJ Premier Blog Vinyl Giveaway
Yes, another giveaway people!! We have the great opportunity to team up again with our friends from London, team Blunted Astronaut Records. This time we give you another 7″, but one that will be more familiar to your ears:
It’s been just over a year since the passing of legendary recording artist Jimmy Castor. To mark this occasion, Blunted Astronaut and DJ Doom are proud to present a very special tribute to one of the most important B-Boy anthems of all time – the 1970 funk masterpiece “It’s Just Begun”.
Hailing from Brooklyn, NYC, Doom has been immersed in Hip-Hop culture since the days of his youth in the early 1980’s. Graff writer, B-Boy, DJ, producer – there’s not a lot the man hasn’t done! On this, his third BA release, he teams up with Nutso for a truly unique project, revisiting a timeless classic that carries forward the musical legacy of the late, great, Jimmy Castor for years to come.
His trusty SP1200 is once again put to work, and with guest appearances by Large Professor, Tony Touch and El Da Sensei (The Artifacts) this limited 7” is guaranteed to be another Blunted Astronaut sure shot.
It’s also worth noting that the label artwork (by Mr. Krum) is inspired by the layout and typesetting of the U.S. 45 on Kinetic – the much treasured ‘original’ version.
We all know the track from LiveFromHQ, where it’s being played for several weeks by DJ Premier!
Now… We are giving away 3 copies, you want to win? You probably already know the deal. To win one of these copies you just have to send a mail to bluntedbeats2@hushmail.com with your name and address. Deadline: 10th of July 2013. The winners will also be announced next week.
Big thanks to Nutso & DJ Doom and Blunted Astronaut Records! Of course you can also buy the 7″ and many more music at their shop. Support!!
Panjabi MC Talks Working With DJ Premier
Is it true that you’re reluctant to do things for Bollywood because the music wouldn’t be yours anymore?
Yeah, that’s right, because in Bollywood, they tend to buy the rights. They want to buy the whole rights from you. And obviously their marketing is good within India only, so then you lose the rights to release that yourself anywhere in the world. I do get offers, and I have done stuff for Bollywood, where they said, “Look, we want you to rap or produce a beat for so-and-so’s production.” And I’ll say, “OK, no problem.” But more likely, I don’t actually go out there to try and get deals or anything. A lot of my tracks do get licensed out there, though, that’s the thing. You rapped on a “Chaiyya Chaiyya” remix, right?
That was actually for Spike Lee, for the film Inside Man. It was remixed by DJ Premier, and Spike asked me to rap on the track. The thing with working with films and getting commissioned to do music is that people tend to have certain specifications for what they require, and I find it quite difficult to make music to order, so to speak. When the music, the vibe, comes, I’ll just produce it at the time. That’s more how I do it.How was it working with Premier?
I mean, he’s definitely one of my idols. To me, Premier, Dr. Dre, people like that, they are the pioneers of the sound of hip-hop. Definitely it was a great honor to be in the same studio as him and to work with him. It was amazing.
Nice to hear from him again!

Marco Polo Names “2 To The Stomach” As His 2nd Favorite Sample Flip
Marco Polo: “Yeah, I’m going a little further into Preem’s catalog only because I read up all the other sample flips lists so I want my shit to be different. Nonetheless, this is riot inducing type production. DJ Premier is the chop emperor and the drum king. This beat demonstrates both. He took 3-4 pieces of those sax-a-ma-phones – (c) Homer Simpson – which really don’t sound so sinister on the original and made some filth for Blaq Poet to yell on. What the hell is better then this? Another reason Preem is the man is because he’ll pick 2-3 pieces of some shit on its own that most people would skip over BUT when he hooks it up, then adds his signature drums, bounce, funk… game over people, bow down to the king of the chop. He also has this eerie, steady string sound in there that he uses in other beats to fill up space. Love it. That’s what makes a classic producer to me. Having those little signature sounds and using them in numerous beats. establishing “a sound” used to be mandatory. Standing out in the crowd was a goal, now it’s bite city.”

Papoose Encouraged By DJ Premier’s Support
Several notable Rap figures told Papoose that he couldn’t relax now that he’d released his long-awaited debut album. “I was talking to brothers in the game I respect like DJ Premier,” Papoose says. “He was telling me, ‘Yo, man I love the album. I’m glad you finally got it out, and you can’t hesitate to drop the next one. It can’t take seven years…you gotta be fast on it. And I’m definitely gonna be a part of it.’ He’s not the only one that’s told me that; I’m hearing it from a couple different people. Just judging from what people that support me are saying, I think I’m gonna have to move fast to get this next album out. I’m already planning, plotting and strategizing on that. Remy [Ma] will be home next year, and I’m just gonna be contributing to her movement and what she’s trying to do from behind the scenes. We’re working on a lot of things under the table, because a lot of different companies and entities are reaching out to her. We’re planning her comeback, so I feel sorry for everybody.”
DJ Premier Added on Openair Frauenfeld Festival, Switzerland
