R.I.P. Johnny Dankworth

R.I.P. to Johnny Dankworth. Most of you know why I post this… He died at a age of 82. Much respect to the younger generation who recognize this unique artist. Also happy birthday to Jay Dee (in all honestly, I played this year more Jay Dee then DJ Premier I think). Good day to think about life.

R.I.P. Apache

US rapper who had short lived success with backing from A Tribe Called Quest and Naughty By Nature. His first appearance was in 1990 on 45 King, The Presents The Flavor Unit by Flavor Unit, The. Apart from his individual records (see below), he also featured on several albums (of Naughty By Nature, Tupac, Fat Joe, etc. ). Apache’s debut album “Apache Ain’t Shit” was released in 1991 and peaked at #66 on the Billboard 200 and #15 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Also featured on the album was the hit single “Gangsta Bitch” which went to #67 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #11 on the Hot Rap Singles. Apache also released a single “Do Fa Self” in 1993 but he has yet to release another album or single.

Flavor Unit emcee Apache, born Anthony Teaks, passed away today (January 22) after a protracted illness. Damn, I loved that LP. I’m such a 90s hip hop fan. R.I.P.

Statik Selektah Birthday Gig with DJ Premier Tonight

Also Statik Selektah‘s new album “100 Proof: The Hangover” release party at SOBs on the 3th of february with NYGz and Bahamadia! Bahamadia should really collaborate with Year Round Records! Support Statik!

Crooked I Wants DJ Premier On His Next Project

He’s got a lot in store for this project, including a folder of beats from DJ Khalil and possible cuts from DJ Premier.

“Ah, man, I got a folder with some beats sent over to me from DJ Khalil. So, I’ma definitely go in with him. He’s one of my favorite producers right now. There’s some new kids out there and I make it my business to get with some of the new talent. There’s a kid named Quest out there who’s real hot. I’m gonna reach out to Alchemist. Then, I’ve talked to DJ Premier already so I wouldn’t be surprised if Premier has a few slappers on there, as well.”

Knowing that some fans have been anticipating a Premo/Crook collaboration for some time, he added that he couldn’t wait for it to happen.

“Aw, I can’t wait, man. I can’t wait for that combination right there. Hip Hop needed to see that a long time ago. I can’t wait to get with Premier.

Note from DJ Premier himself:

I judge my list based on dope beats, dope rhymes, scratchin’ and cutting, creativity, uniqueness, originality, and overall packaging of the product’s integrity. I don’t care if you sold a million copies, that does not make it dope. I went through more than 60 LP’s released in ’09 on major and indie labels over and over to get it as close as i possible could to being satisfied with the list so here it is along with the list.
